New Year New Shelves: A Library Media Specialist's Back to School Moment

There's a particular kind of quiet that fills a library the week before students arrive. The shelves are straightened. The book displays are fresh. And I stand in the middle of it all knowing that in a few short days, this stillness will be replaced by the best kind of noise — sneakers squeaking, chairs scraping, kids asking "do you have any books about—" before they've even finished walking through the door.

I love this week. Not because it's calm — though I'll take the calm while I can get it — but because it's full of possibility. Every year, I get to be the person who hands a reluctant reader the one book that changes everything. This job is part logistics, part matchmaking, and part magic, and back-to-school week is where all of it begins again.

This year, I've been thinking a lot about what I want the library to feel like — not just what it looks like. I want it to be the place a kid can breathe. Where the pressure of hallways and grades and fitting in gets to pause for a minute.

So here's what's on my mind as the doors open again:

Teaching information literacy earlier and often. 

In a world of endless scrolling, I want kids leaving my library not just having read a good book, but knowing how to ask good questions of the information in front of them.

Making space for the reluctant reader. 

Not every kid loves to read yet. That's not a failure — that's an opportunity. Somewhere in this building is a graphic novel, an audiobook, a weird nonfiction deep-dive that's going to be the one that hooks them.

Remembering I'm not just managing a room, I'm building a relationship. 

With every class that walks through, with every teacher I collaborate with, with every kid who comes during lunch just to sit, read or do homework. That relationship is the whole point.
